A HOMELESS man has been left in despair waiting months for a flat he has been offered to be ready to move into.

He has been left rough sleeping while he waits for the keys to the housing association flat.

Daniel Thomson, 37, said: “I was told on January 24 they had a flat for me.

“I viewed it more than five weeks ago and accepted it. I was told it would be ready in two weeks, three weeks max.

"I was told it needed a 'sparkle clean' and then it would be ready."

Outside the flat, Daniel said he has no idea when he will get a roof over his head he can call his own.

Glasgow Times:

Daniel added: "Last Tuesday I tried to contact the housing officer and left a message but I have not heard anything.

“I don’t know when I can move in.

“I am having to rely on people putting me up. Since viewing the flat I’ve been rough sleeping twice when I have had nowhere else to go.”

Daniel said when he asked about a move-in date and told the landlord he had nowhere to go he was told to contact the homeless service.

He has been to the City Mission overnight welcome centre when he had no place to sleep.

He said he would not allow himself to be put in a homeless hotel because his brother died in one last year.

Daniel, who became homeless after a relationship break-up, said he is looking to get back into work once he has a new address and can get his life back on track.

Sean Clerkin, campaign co-ordinator of the Scottish Tenants Organisation, has been assisting Mr Thomson.

He said: “It is a disgrace that Daniel who is homeless has been kept waiting for over two months and still counting since being told he would be housed on a permanent basis by the Wheatley Group.

“In the meantime, he has been forced to do sofa surfing and sleep on the streets.

“Wheatley Housing Group have got to do better when dealing with homeless people, meeting their needs instead of treating them with complete indifference.”

Wheatley Homes Glasgow said it has been in regular contact with Mr Thomson and apologised for the delay.

A spokesperson said “We’re very sorry for any delay in the property being ready. “Unfortunately, the previous tenants took longer to move out than we’d hoped, and we’ve also had to arrange for repairs inside the home.

“We are doing everything we can to get the property ready for the customer as soon as possible.

“Our team will continue to keep in regular contact with the customer.”
