DOG lovers in the Borders are being encouraged to 'Have a Go' at the Border Union Dog Show this summer.

By joining the Kennel Club's 'Have a Go' session at this year's Border Union Championship Dog Show at Springwood Park, Kelso, Borders dogs and their owners could find themselves qualifying for Crufts.

Owners interested in showing their canine friends can take part in the training session and competition on Sunday, June 16.

The 'Have a Go' sessions aim to give pedigree dog owners the opportunity to see what it is like to compete in a show ring, and offers the chance to earn a place at "the world’s greatest dog show", Crufts, which will be held at the NEC in Birmingham from March 6-9, 2025.

Helen Kerfoot, chief canine health, events and activities officer at the Kennel Club, said: “For those who have ever watched Crufts and wondered how their own canine companion could ever be crowned ‘Best in Show’, the ‘Have a Go’ dog shows could be the first step!

"The shows are energetic and fun-filled for everyone involved.

"It’s wonderful to watch newcomers discovering and learning the skills of dog showing in a laidback yet educational environment and is so inspiring.

"I have no doubt there could be further future Crufts stars in our midst in the borders of Scotland!”

'Have a Go' sessions are being held around the UK at a number of dog championships in the lead up to Crufts next year.

The sessions are open to people of all ages and abilities, with a pedigree dog.

No prior experience in showing dogs is needed.

The sessions also offer a great opportunity for owners to meet like-minded dog-lovers and their furry friends where they can share their love of dogs and ambitions.

The ‘Have a Go’ sessions are supported by the Our Dogs newspaper, Birdbrook and Awardboard Rosettes, Yorkshire Finest Pet Food, Josera Foods, Royal Canin and Eukanuba.

Rosettes and goody bags will be provided to all dogs and owners who compete.

Tickets to join the session cost £10 and include parking and a beginner's dog showing pack.
