PEEBLES will be well represented at a huge cycling event coming to the Tweed Valley this summer.

A number of Borderers are among the 30 cyclist selected for the Great Britain squad for the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.

Peebles’ Isla Short will be leading the Scots charge in the elite cross country events and Callum Thornley, who is also from the town, will compete in the men’s u23 road race and time trial.

Peebles Cycling Club alumni Ben Allan will be involved in the MTB cross country u23 men’s junior race, Anna McGorum and Elena McGorum in the MTB cross country women’s U23 race, Corran Carrick-Anderson in the MTB cross country men’s U23 race and Emily Carrick-Anderson in the MTB cross country women’s junior race.

Scottish Cycling’s head of performance and coaching, David Somerville, said: “Firstly I want to say congratulations to each and every one of those selected – being picked to ride at a home championships, and an inaugural one at that, is a special opportunity, that I know they’ll make the most of.

“Cycling in Scotland is certainly on the up, and we see that with the depth across the team, from the household names who we know are targeting rainbow jerseys, through to those making their debut at this level in the age-group race – this is just the start for them.

“I have no doubt all of our riders will leave no stone unturned in their final preparations, but also hope they can take pride in their selection, and soak in the atmosphere and use it to their advantage come competition day.”

The championships will take place between August 3-11.

Last week the handover of Glentress to tournament organisers began.

The championships will see 8,000 athletes from 120 countries compete at sites across Scotland.

The first event in the Tweed Valley will be the mountain bike cross country marathon on August 6.
