IN what can only be described as the worst conditions ever seen for football, Rovers took all three points from a plucky Ancrum side just before Christmas.

After Rovers were led out by young Aaron Glendinning, both sides administered a minute’s applause for Rovers legend Graham Glendinning who was laid to rest the day before the match.

With the wind, Rovers took the game to Ancrum and after a few half chances, finally took the lead following an inch perfect corner delivery was flicked on by Forrest and then drilled home by McMath.

Ancrum were punished again on 14 minutes, this time from a Shearlaw delivery on the other side. McMath was in deadly form and stabbed the ball home.

On 25 minutes, the move of the match saw Rovers knock in a third goal. A great pass from Forrest was left by McMath to release his strike partner Steele who made no mistake at the near post.

Rovers were on fire and were clearly being spurred on by the watching Glendinning family. A couple of close shaves for Ancrum passed before McMath finished off both Ancrum and his hat trick on 38 minutes, drilling home from 12 yards after good play by Shearlaw.

The second half started as the first finished and Rovers had a few chances to finish the game off, but they failed to take them.

Ancrum were then pulled back into the game when a swirling shot was fumbled by Watson and the on-rushing striker knocked home the rebound.

Further clear cut chances were missed by Thomson and McMath and as the Leithen defence stopped for what was a clear cut foul, the referee failed to blow and the Ancrum striker made no mistake.

After that the game petered out as the weather started to dictate what football could be played and the game eventually finished 4-2 to the hosts.

Manger Paul Graham said: “That victory was for Graham Glendinning, this would have been his type of game which he would have bossed. Our thoughts go out to the family and the hammer will never be forgotten.” Leithen Rovers. Watson, Paterson, Smith, Forrest, Borthwick, Shearlaw (Baillie), Almero, Philbin, Thomson, McMath & Steele (Fleming).
