THE wind may have stopped play at the Old Course for competitors in The Open Championship, but it wasn’t strong enough to put off the hardly members at Peebles on Saturday, with the incentive of the prestigious Centenary Trophy claret jug at stake.

In a closely fought contest, it was 12-handicapper George Hirst who came out on top, with a consistent round of 79 giving him a net 67 and a one-shot victory over Mark Bain, whose consolation was the lowest scratch score of the day with a 73.

David McAillister claimed third spot with a net 68, beaten by Mark on the better inward half.

The Holiday Tankard got underway earlier in the week and its Andrew Flannery and Norman Forsyth who are leading the way after opening rounds of 67 and 68 respectively, both firing scratch scores of 71.

Sunday’s Junior Medal was won by Ross Aiken with a fantastic net 60, seeing his handicap quickly cut to 29. Well done Ross – a great start to your competitive junior career! Fearghas Lowther came second with a fine net 67.

Great to see another good turnout at ClubGolf last weekend, with both coaching sessions busy, a few of the youngsters making further progress towards attaining their handicaps and others gaining valuable experience of being out on the course. Coaching continues this Sunday, from the usual time of 12pm for P1 – 3, and 1.15pm for P4 – S1.

Meanwhile, further high winds resulted in high scoring in the ladies’ monthly medal. With the CSS at 74 only Senga Brown in the Bronze Division beat par, 73 (24). Patricia Wood claimed top spot on a countback after a three-way tie with Iris French and Moira Brown, with 75 (12).

Elizabeth White and Mandi Bain won the Rutherford Cup, 71 (26), and will represent the Peebles Ladies in the Daily Mail knockout competition over the next twelve months.

The annual Gents v Ladies match is scheduled for Thursday, July 30. A good turnout is hoped for. If you are keen to play in this popular, competitive but friendly match, please add your name to the respective lists on the noticeboard in the clubhouse.
