WITH only a year to go until the Commonwealth Games in Australia, one former champion is making giant strides in her bid to return to the team.

It is seven years since Stacey Downie from West Linton won the UK Under 23 200 metres title.

And almost as long since she was the dominant force in Scottish sprinting.

But the 28-year-old teacher is running her way back into contention - and she has been boosted this week by the ratification of her recent 4x200 metres success with Edinburgh as being a Scottish National Club record as well as a Scottish Native Record.

Along with Jedburgh student Jazmine Tomlinson, Sarah Malone and Siobhan Kingham the quartet broke the tape in 1.40.95 ahead of Giffnock and VP Glasgow to claim the Scottish Indoor title last month.

Stacey told us: "Ratification of these Scottish records tops off what was a fantastic team performance.

"I'm also delighted at my own personal performance having ran the fastest relay split of the day.

"It is a great start to an important season with the Commonwealth Games on the horizon."
