NETBALL in Peebles has received a grand boost from a housebuilder ahead of the world school championships.

Peebles High School netball teams have been handed a £1,000 donation from Persimmon Homes East Scotland to support their bid to become world school champions in June.

Having experienced extraordinary success in the Scottish Schools Cup with teams appearing in finals every year over the last 12 years - Peebles High School has won six gold titles in the last five years alone.

As a result of their success the school has been invited to enter two teams in the World School Games at Loughborough this year to compete against teams from around the world.

Linda Nicholson, Peebles Netball head coach, said: “We are thrilled to receive this funding.

"To compete on a world-wide stage is a chance of a lifetime for our Under 13 and Under 15 teams so we are working hard to raise funds for new kit, transport, accommodation and meals."

The cash donation has also been welcomed by High School rector Campbell Wilson.

He told us: "This money will make a huge difference in helping to fund transport costs to and from the competition and on behalf of the school I would like to thank Persimmon Homes.”

The donation comes as part of Persimmon Home’s Community Champions initiative that donates funds of up to £1,000 each month to groups, clubs and charities in the towns and cities that the business is building new homes.

Jim Kirkpatrick, managing director at Persimmon Homes East Scotland, said: “We are extremely proud of our Community Champions schemes. It’s fantastic to be able to support clubs and charities across our region with tens of thousands of pounds every year.

“Peebles High School netball teams are obviously very motivated and successful already and we felt that they deserved our support.

“We wish them the best of luck in the World School Games Netball Cup and hope that they all enjoy what will be an unforgettable experience.”
