PEEBLES Rugby Club is set to host the Kings of the Sevens 2019/20 season opener at the Gytes this Saturday, August 3.

Sponsored by Greenfield Marquees and So Stobo, 12 teams from in and around the region will compete for the crown this weekend.

In the group stages, each team will play two matches, with the winners of each pool advancing to the semi-finals, followed by the final.

Last year's Peebles Sevens champions, Melrose, will be keen to kickstart the season with a bang, and attempt to defend their title.

And having won half of the last ten tournaments in Peebles, the side will be looking to capitalise on recent success.

They will play against Heriot and Edinburgh Academicals in Pool 2.

In a fairly evenly matched group, Peebles will play against Berwick and Hawick in Pool 4.

And Biggar will face off against some stiff competition in the form of Gala and former tournament champions Watsonians in Pool 3.

Finally, Jed-forest will play against Kelso and Selkirk in Pool 1, with the first tie kicking off at 2pm.

There will be food and beer tents on the grounds, and all attendees are reminded that no carry in of alcohol is permitted.

Tickets cost £10 for adults, and £5 for concessions and under 12s will receive free entry.

Under 12s will receive free entry to the event.

The weather is looking to be suitable for spectators, with scattered showers and predicted highs of 21 degrees Celsius.

Despite the main event taking place on the Saturday, there are events on either side of the Peebles Sevens for local rugby fans to enjoy.

Friday night will see the festival of rugby kick off down at the Gytes at 6pm when the under 16s sevens, involving all eight Borders clubs, will take place.

And on Sunday, the weekend of rugby will conclude with the Peebles Colts sevens.

Admission is free for the tournaments on Friday and Sunday.
