A BORDERS rugby star has been selected to represent Syria in a “dream” moment.
Omar Darwish, 18, who plays for Gala Wanderers and has been with Gala Rugby since he was in S1, was announced as one of the players joining the Syrian Men’s 7s side.
The youngster said he was in disbelief when he first heard the news.
He said: “I could not believe the letter when I received it, so my parents and I went on the Syrian Rugby website to check, and we were absolutely delighted when it was true.
“It has been my dream to play for the Syrian Rugby team and I just cannot believe this has happened to me, I’m so pleased.”
Darwish will join the team to train before taking part in the Arab Rugby Sevens Championship next month.
The tournament, set to be held in Saudi Arabia, will see Syria face teams from at least 10 other countries – including hosts Saudi Arabia, Libya, Egypt and the UAE, who are defending champions.
“I’m looking forward to the two-week training camp and the tournament so much in February,” said Darwish.
“[I] just cannot wait to experience how fast and physical it will be, along with playing in the heat in Saudi Arabia.”
On his successful selection, the 18-year-old thanked those who had helped him reach his dream.
He said: “I would like to thank everyone at Gala Rugby Club, Galashiels Academy, especially the coaches and players at the Wanderers for helping me – I would not have been in this position without all of them.
“Lastly, can I thank everyone who has sent me all the lovely messages of support on Facebook. I’m very grateful. Thank you very much.”
